About Montenegro

Montenegro is one of the world’s newest countries, but certainly not the youngest. Travellers have been exploring the Balkans for centuries, and since gaining independence from Serbia in 2006, Montenegro is once again welcoming visitors. Enjoy while it is unspoilt!

Montenegro, or Crna Gora as it is known locally, translates as Black Mountain. But which one? This is a stunning country of massive mountains and silent lakes, with a superb coastline of beaches and bays. And perhaps the most beautiful area is the Boka Kotorska, Europe’s largest inland fiord, fringed by historic villages of old stone houses, and flanked by soaring mountains. Find out more about the area on our Montenegro Blog.

Take a walk on the wild side - up Kotor's fortifications for superb views of the town and around

Kotor - a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Dominating the innermost bay of the Boka is Kotor, the buzzing centre of this World Heritage Site. Explore the narrow medieval streets, free from cars, and admire the architecture while sipping a coffee at a cafe.

If you’re feeling energetic, climb the ring of Kotor, the fortifications that straddle the mountain behind, which when lit up at night, complete a circle with their reflection in the water of the Boka.

"Orahovac is one of the most beautiful villages along the Kotor fjord, perfectly placed between the world heritage sites of Perast and Kotor. The apartment is new, very clean, spacious, well equipped and has fantastic views of the bay. "

Orahovac - with All Day Sun

Our villa is situated in the centre of Orahovac, a lovely waterfront village on the Boka Kotorska. Unlike some of the Boka villages which are in deep shade from the mountains by mid afternoon, Orahovac’s position on its own bay ensures that the apartments catch the sun all day.

Also unusually, Orahovac has its own, white-pebbled beach, fringed by trees, ideal for family swimming parties, and just five minutes’ walk from the apartment.

Lie on your back in the warm water and gaze at the mountains all round – or take a hike up through the village to the chapel of St George, perched on its own rock, for amazing views over the Boka.

If you’ve worked up an appetite, try the café in Orahovac which serves traditional Balkan food, or treat yourself to freshly caught fish at the Stari Mlini (Old Mill) restaurant, one of Montenegro’s top venues, in the neighbouring village of Ljuta.

Or you may prefer to do nothing more than just sit on the balcony, and drink in the view!

Stone Houses and Palaces

Down the road is Perast, another beautiful medieval village of stone houses and palaces. Take a boat trip to the two churches on their own islands, guarding the entrance to the bay (Our Lady of the Rock, and the Benedictine Monastery of St George). Explore the fascinating museum on Our Lady, or in Perast itself. Have a go on a segway!

Boat Trips and Adventure Activities

Our very friendly and handsome boat operator, who speaks English and Serbo-Croat, is based in Orahovac in July and August. He can whisk you away in his motor boat for a trip round the bays, lasting a few hours or all day. He also offers banana boats, and water skiing, from the jetty in Orahovac. Please use the enquiry form if you are interested in the boat trips. Once you have booked accommodation, details of boat trips will be sent to you.

Kayaking, walking and rafting tours are also available from a local adventure activity company. Mention Montenegro Apartment for extra special service!

How to get to the apartment

By air:

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Daily flights from most European cities; carriers include EasyJet, British Airways, Croatia Airlines.

Podgorica, Montenegro: Ryanair flies from London Stansted and Brussels Charleroi, and Montenegro Airlines serve many European cities.

Tivat airport, Montenegro: Montenegro Airlines and S7 fly to European and Russian cities.

Car hire and airport transfers:

We can suggest car hire companies or arrange airport transfer for you. Dubrovnik and Podgorica are both about 90 minutes' very scenic drive from the apartments; Tivat is about 20 minutes away. Car hire is recommended for anyone wanting to see as much as possible; otherwise, there are buses that pass through Orahovac every hour, and taxis are cheap and very available.

Please include your requirements in our enquiry form.

Bus:

There is a very regular bus service between Herceg Novi and Kotor, which runs past the door - and a not so regular bus from Dubrovnik airport into Dubrovnik.

We can supply more information on these options, and also the ferry from Bari in Italy, to Bar in Montenegro.

"Great apartment, stunning outlook, top holiday. The apartment's mountain-to-sea panorama gives some idea of the amazing cultural riches that Montenegro has to offer. The steep sides and clear water of the Bay of Kotor are one of the world's natural wonders. Along their banks are towns and villages that show signs of the Greek, Roman, Venetian and French civilizations that have influenced the area. Kotor and Perast. In June, the weather is amazing - but you can always get a table to eat, queues are small or non-existent and everyone seems keen to please. The apartment is great - clean, roomy and well-specified with a really useful custom-written guide to getting the best out of the area. It was also brilliant that Cathy was able to arrange for our hire car to pick us up from Dubrovnik airport, take us to the apartment and then leave us with the car. We will return, and I would recommend the country and these apartments to anyone who wants to combine beaches, culture and locals who actually enjoy meeting visitors to their country . "
Tim, England

"We had an excellent trip and saw a lot of the surrounding areas - including the 29 hairpin trip up to the mausoleum - quite spectacular. All the arrangements worked very well including the car hire, day trip to Dubrovnik, and airport pick-ups. Many thanks for all your help in making the week so enjoyable. All the information that you provided was most helpful and we managed many of the trips recommended. We ended up keeping the car for most of the week not just 4 days. We would certainly thoroughly recommend the apartments and the whole area to others. "
David, Kent, England

"We had a lovely week in your Montenegro apartment. We loved the setting and enjoyed pottering around Kotor, Perast etc. Our children were delighted to swim every day and we really enjoyed the food and wine! We particularly appreciated the help and advice of your housekeeper and car hire operator, who made the whole holiday even more pleasureable. Thanks again, I am sure we will go back to Montenegro at some point in the future. "
Rosalind, Wiltshire

"We have just returned from a most enjoyable holiday in your apartment in Orahovac. We particularly liked swimming in the sea, hanging about in the beach bars, exploring Kotor, and climbing the hill paths around Orahovac. We found the military remains in Crkvice above Risan most interesting. The kids went on a banana boat several times and we all visited the Lady of the Rock at Perast. Montenegro is a fascinating and beautiful county with huge appeal and potential. "
